Markup vs margin
Markup is profit as a percentage of what the job cost you. Margin is profit as a percentage of what you charged. They are never the same number: a 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin. Confusing the two is one of the most common ways trades quietly underprice work.
- 20% markup = 16.7% margin
- 25% markup = 20% margin
- 50% markup = 33.3% margin
- 100% markup = 50% margin
